Do wasps plague you in the summer? Do your arms hurt from the continual swatting? Do you end up eating inside on a hot day because of wasps? Read on for a few helpful hints….
Okay so lets start by saying I normally hate these kind of lists, you know the ones… “9 ways to have a happy marriage” or “10 ways to keep your children learning at school” that kinda thing…
however, I’m going to play devils avocado for a minute (yes I know that’s not the normal saying).
As a professional pest controller I can offer some helpful tips to try and reduce the absolute nuisance wasps can be in the summer when all you’re really interested in is sunburning yourself into a crisp or charcoaling anything you put within a 2 meter radius of the bbq.
Introducing the Dan James’ list of 5 things you can do to REDUCE the amount of wasps in your garden this summer – catchy title hey?
- Tightly seal all bins, food caddy’s and the lids on your recycling boxes too, especially the ones holding the cans and/ or wine bottles. Once wasps find an area containing sugary liquids or food sources they will keep returning and bring all of their little friends along with them.
- Seal of cracks and crevices around your home, especially around sheds/ garages and your soffit and fascia boards. A simple bead of sealer will suffice but this really needs to be done by April/ May at the latest to be effective.
- Wasp traps are a fantastic solution to the continual swatting you’ll do over the summer as they contain a liquid attractant to attract the wasps and once inside they can’t get back out. A couple of things to be aware of though, not all wasp traps are created equally and the best on the market are the Wasp Bane’s or the AF range of traps by Killgerm which can be found in our website store. Also the attractant you use is the key, ensure it has a bee repellant in it or you’ll end up with a trap full of foraging honey bees.
- Around the windows and doors at home you can use a Clove-Geranium-Lemongrass Oil blend, research has been shown that this will repel wasps and hopefully stop them finding their way inside. Find it here on Amazon.
- Peppermint oil is another alternative to the above mentioned one, it is more readily available and I have some clients who swear by it. Find it here on Amazon.
If all else fails and you end up with a wasps nest at home then don’t hesitate to contact us and we can remove it quickly and safely.
Stay safe this summer, enjoy yourself and remember the factor 50 (Wishful thinking).
